In India, of the four lakh hectares of area under onion, the maximum area of about 95,000 ha (about 24%) is in Maharashtra.

The highest Onion producing states in India are Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Telangana. The first ranks in Onion production is Maharashtra with a share of 28.32%.
